Twitter bans accounts for Trump campaign, digital director

Twitter banned President Trump’s official campaign account and his digital director for attempting to use their accounts to give the president a platform to speak on Twitter after he was permanently suspended Friday.

The @TeamTrump account tweeted a statement last night from Trump telling his supporters he would be building his own social media platform and said Twitter is “about promoting a Radical Left platform.”

The account continued and posted a graphic of the Twitter logo in red with the communist symbol on it. The account was permanently suspended along with Trump’s digital director, Gary Coby, for helping Trump evade his Twitter suspension.

Coby used his account to change his profile picture and display name to Donald J. Trump. He then tweeted, “@DanScavino: Texting you my Twitter login…I already updated the profile pic, name etc. Feel free to use!”

Coby’s account was banned only five minutes after posting that tweet.

“As stated in our ban evasion policy, if it is clear that another account is being used for the purposes of evading a ban, it is also subject to suspension,” a Twitter spokesperson told The Hill.

“If we have a reason to believe he’s using accounts to evade the suspension, the accounts could face permanent suspension under our ban evasion policies,” the spokesperson continued.

Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s account Friday night after he started tweeting once his previous 12-hour ban was lifted.

When the ban was lifted, Trump continued to tweet about the election and how he would not attend President-elect Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration. Twitter permanently banned him after those tweets for violation of its glorification of violence policy.

Trump took to his second account, @POTUS, after the ban to announce the building of his own social media platform and to rail against Section 230, which gives tech companies liability protections.

“Attempts by Trump to circumvent the ban using the @POTUS or @WhiteHouse handles will be removed,” a Twitter spokesperson said.

Twitter deleted the tweets off the POTUS account but did not suspend it since it is a government account.

“For government accounts, such as @POTUS and @WhiteHouse, we will not suspend those accounts but will take action to limit their use,” the spokesperson said. “However, these accounts will be transitioned over to the new administration in due course and will not be suspended by Twitter unless absolutely necessary to alleviate real-world harm.”

Trump has now been banned from multiple platforms since the Wednesday riots at the Capitol after he shared a video calling the rioters “special” people.
