Google, Department of Energy sign five-year agreement for digital tools

Google will provide the Department of Energy (DOE) with access to its cloud technologies under a five-year agreement with the federal government, those involved in the deal announced Thursday.

Under the agreement, the DOE will have access to Google tools including the tech giant’s Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace productivity tools.

The agency said it will use the cloud technology for a range of purposes including to help predict which energy equipment will require preventative maintenance, help cities identify cost-efficient renewable energy resources, and manage data pouring into research facilities.

The price of the multiyear agreement was not immediately clear and additional details were not released.

“Our work with Google Cloud is helping us reduce the friction and pivot to innovation,” said Rocky Campione, chief information officer for DOE.

“With this agreement, we’re helping our labs focus on solving problems and get to a place where they can pick the computer they need to get their jobs done.”

Personnel at the DOE will also be able to use Google Professional Services.

“The DOE conducts some of the most cutting-edge research in the world,” said Mike Daniels, vice president for Global Public Sector cloud sales.

“We are both proud and humbled to play a leading role in helping the DOE advance critical work in the energy sector for the betterment of mankind.”
