Elon Musk announced Tuesday his artificial intelligence company xAI’s chatbot Grok will be available to all premium subscribers on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Later this week, Grok will be enabled for all premium subscribers (not just premium+),” Musk wrote Tuesday on X, without providing additional details.

The chatbot was previously only available for users with X’s highest subscription level, Premium+, which includes no advertisements on the “For You” and “Following” feeds and access to Articles — an X feature for long-form written content.

Earlier this month, Musk announced xAI will open source Grok shortly after suing OpenAI — the maker of ChatGPT — for failing to remain open source.

Musk, who helped found OpenAI in 2015, sued company CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman for breach of content, arguing the pair strayed from OpenAI’s founding agreement in partnering with Microsoft.

Musk said he, Altman and Brockman agreed at the time of the company’s founding that OpenAI would be a nonprofit that developed artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity and would remain open source.

Musk argued that the company instead is developing AI technology to “maximize profits for Microsoft” and has not released details about the internal design of its latest AI model “to serve the proprietary commercial interest of Microsoft.”

OpenAI shot back earlier this month and claimed Musk supported turning the company into a for-profit entity and was looking for OpenAI to merge with Tesla — Musk’s automotive company.

Musk’s decision to open source Grok will enable researchers and developers to build on the model amid competition from OPenAI, Google, Meta and more, The Verge reported earlier this month.
