Google getting rid of Pay app in June

Google will shut down the Google Pay app for U.S. users in early June, shuttering a service once heralded as a possible replacement for Android Pay and Google Wallet.

The company announced the upcoming shutdown of the app Thursday, saying it hopes to streamline the company’s payment apps to include only Google Wallet, which it said is used five times more in the U.S. than the Pay app.

While it won’t be available in the U.S. past June 4, the Google Pay app will remain accessible in India and Singapore.

Users in the U.S. will still be able to access Google Pay’s most popular features, such as managing payment methods and paying in stores, through Google Wallet.

Consumers will not be able to request, receive and send money with the U.S. iteration of the Google Pay app as of June 4, however. U.S. users also have until that day to transfer their balance on the Pay app to their bank accounts.

Consumers who relied on the Pay app to search for shopping deals will be able to do so through Google Search, the company said.

Google Pay was originally rolled out in 2018 as the company’s new unified payment service that combined Google Wallet and Android Pay.
