Musk says new AI company will debut technology on Saturday
Elon Musk said his new artificial intelligence (AI) startup will make its debut Saturday.
“Tomorrow, xAI will release its first AI to a select group,” Musk posted on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter that he owns. “In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists.”
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, filed new business paperwork in Nevada in April for the company and announced in July that he would be launching the artificial intelligence company to compete with efforts backed by major tech firms.
Musk previously said that it is possible AI “goes wrong and destroys humanity.” According to its website, xAI seeks to “understand the true nature of the universe.”
The company posted in August that it was hiring creators, teachers and curators. The team was asking for people to direct message “evidence of your most exceptional work.”
While a lot of the company’s technology is still unknown to the public, it’s expected that it will likely resemble and compete with other AI technologies like OpenAI, Google and Amazon, which all have their own leading chatbot technologies that have become extremely popular with the public in the last year.
According to a statement from the company, the team is comprised of alumni of other companies DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research and Tesla. The statement said team members contributed to some of the “most widely used methods in the field” and have worked on and led the “development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field.”
Greg Yang, the co-founder of xAI, posted online that the technology he had been developing will be central “to taking AI to the next level.”
