Target to testify on data breach next month

Retail giant Target will testify at a hearing next month on data security.

A representative from Target, which recently suffered from a data breach putting the financial and personal information of at least 70 million customers at risk, will testify in front of the House Commerce subcommittee on trade in February, the committee announced late Wednesday.

“Tens of millions of Americans have had their information compromised in recent weeks, and consumers deserve to know what information has been taken and the potential threats that exist,” subcommittee Chairman Lee Terry (R-Neb.) said in a statement.

“By examining these recent breaches and their consequences on consumers, we hope to gain a better understanding of the nature of these crimes and what steps can be taken to further protect information and limit cyber threats.”

Terry said his subcommittee “will continue aggressively working” on the issue of data breaches “to safeguard Americans in this increasingly digital world.”
