California shuts down fake ObamaCare sites

California’s attorney general shut down 10 websites Thursday that allegedly pretended to be the state’s official insurance exchange under ObamaCare.

The sites used similar words and phrases as the state’s official site, CoveredCA.com, to trick consumers, the state said.

{mosads}“These websites fraudulently imitated Covered California in order to lure consumers away from plans that provide the benefits of the Affordable Care Act,” state Attorney General Kamala Harris said. “My office will continue to investigate and shut down these kinds of sites.”

Her office also released a set of tips to help consumers avoid scams related to the Affordable Care Act.

The state shut down sites with web addresses, such as www.coveredcalifornia.com, www.californiabenefitexchange.com,  www.californiahealthbenefitexchange.com and www.shopforhealthcare.org.

California’s insurance exchange has mostly avoided the problems that have plagued the federal version of the website.
