Netflix to roll out social features to US subscribers in 2013
“We are pleased the Senate has moved quickly to modernize the [Video Privacy Protection Act], giving consumers more freedom to share with friends when they want,” a Netflix spokesman said in an email. “After the president signs the bill, we will introduce social features for our U.S. members in 2013.”
The spokesman declined to comment further on the new features. Talking Points Memo first reported the news and noted that Netflix subscribers in Latin America and Canada have been able to link their accounts with Facebook and share which movies they’ve watched with friends since 2011.
The Senate passed a House-approved version of the bill by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) last Thursday. The final version included some suggested additions from the Senate, such as a measure that states consumers can opt-out of sharing their video viewing history at any time.
