An armed suspect who was shot by an FBI agent outside of the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) headquarters in McLean, Va., has died, the FBI confirmed on Tuesday.

The FBI’s Washington field office said on Twitter that the suspect died from his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The agency said it will continue to investigate, but would not provide any additional information.

“The subject involved in the shooting incident outside CIA Headquarters at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2021, died from his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The FBI reviews every shooting incident involving an FBI special agent,” the FBI said.

“The review will carefully examine the circumstances of the shooting and collect all relevant evidence from the scene,” the bureau continued. “As the review remains ongoing, we cannot provide any additional details at this time.”

The individual emerged from his vehicle with a weapon and was “engaged by law enforcement officers,” the bureau said. The suspect was wounded and transported to a hospital for his injuries.

The FBI didn’t say what exactly led up to the event, but sources familiar with the incident told CNN on Monday that the man drove up to the gates and made statements suggesting there was a bomb in his vehicle.

Officials told NBC News that the man was mentally disturbed, and that he had previously tried to enter the CIA campus.
