FBI confirms additional suspicious packages sent to Biden, Robert DeNiro

The FBI said Thursday it was investigating several suspicious packages sent to former Vice President Joe Biden and actor Robert De Niro, one day after explosive devices were mailed to former President Obama and Hillary Clinton, as well as other top Democrats.

Biden was the target of two separate packages, the FBI reported Thursday, while De Niro’s office in New York was also targeted with one suspicious parcel. The bureau called the packages “similar in appearance to the others,” but declined to immediately explain the contents further.

“The #FBI has confirmed three additional packages, similar in appearance to the others – one in New York addressed to Robert DeNiro, and two in Delaware addressed to former Vice President Joseph Biden,” the FBI tweeted Thursday morning, hours after confirming two of the packages had been sent to California congresswoman Rep. Maxine Waters (D).

Packages containing explosives were intercepted by law enforcement and investigated on Wednesday after they arrived at various locations addressed to top Democrats, including one addressed to former Attorney General Eric Holder.

The packages reportedly had Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz‘s (D) contact information listed for the return address. Wasserman Schultz said she is “deeply disturbed” that her name was attached.

It wasn’t immediately clear why De Niro was among the prominent figures targeted. The Hollywood actor has been prominent critic of President Trump’s, making headlines earlier this year when he condemned the president onstage at the Tony Awards. Other targets of the explosives have also criticized the president and been targets of Trump’s criticism.

The FBI has assumed control over the investigation, which includes incidents spanning across the country that occurred over a matter of hours.

“This investigation is of the highest priority for the FBI. We have committed the full strength of the FBI’s resources and, together with our partners on our JTTFs, we will continue to work to identify and arrest whoever is responsible for sending these packages,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said Wednesday.
