Number of Americans impacted by health incidents in Cuba rises to 21

The number of American diplomats affected by mysterious health incidents at the U.S. Embassy in Havana rose Tuesday from 19 to 21, according to a Washington Post report. 

The State Department has received additional reports of American diplomats affected by the strange symptoms, according to the Post. The cause of the symptoms, however, remains unknown.

The State Department said on Sept. 1 that it had tallied some 19 cases of harm to U.S. diplomats working at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba. 

{mosads}The incidents began in fall 2016 and continued until the spring, before apparently coming to a halt. But the State Department revealed that the health incidents happened again as recently as August.

The U.S. is investigating the incidents and has not yet determined who is responsible for them.

Officials had initially pinned the symptoms on a covert sonic device planted in or near diplomats’ residences. But investigators haven’t found such devices. 

The State Department revealed the existence of the incidents last month, when the agency announced that it had expelled two Cuban diplomats from the country’s embassy in Washington earlier this year.

The Cuban government has denied any wrongdoing or involvement in the attacks and is said to be conducting its own investigation into the matter.
