House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) is continuing to review intelligence on Russian election meddling despite recusing himself from his panel’s Russia investigation last month, CNN reported on Thursday.
Nunes reportedly reviewed intelligence at the CIA this week, according to CNN.
Nunes recused himself from the Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russia’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 election last month amid a House ethics probe into whether he divulged classified information.
{mosads}Prior to his recusal, Nunes stirred controversy in March when he publicly revealed that he had seen evidence that the intelligence community incidentally surveilled members of President Trump’s transition team. It was later revealed that Nunes viewed the intelligence reports on White House grounds and delivered his findings to the White House before doing so to Congress.
Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) replaced Nunes as the head of the Intelligence Committee’s investigation.
Despite recusing himself from the committee’s investigation, Nunes is still a member of the “Gang of 8” — a bipartisan group of lawmakers on the House and Senate Intelligence committees with access to higher classifications of intelligence.
Nunes is also expected to view classified intelligence as part of his role as the Intelligence Committee chairman, a House GOP aide told CNN, and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is not setting the limits for the California Republican’s recusal.
A spokesman for Nunes did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
