New satellite images show Russia continuing large buildup across Ukraine border
New satellite images show Russia continuing a large buildup across several areas of the Ukraine border as Western countries continue to warn of a possible invasion.
Maxar Technologies, a private U.S. company watching Russian military activity near Ukraine, published satellite images on Thursday that show several areas where the country has moved troops or equipment, Reuters reported.
The images taken on Wednesday and Thursday show troops and weapons being moved in Russia and Belarus as well as the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia invaded and annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
Less than 15 miles from the Ukrainian border in Belarus, Russia deployed military helicopters, vehicles and new troops, according to the images.
The Kursk training area in Russia, about 65 miles from the Ukrainian border, saw significant troop deployment. In Crimea, hundreds of new vehicles and around 550 troop tents were found in the images.
The movement is on top of the more than 100,000 troops Russia has moved toward the border of Ukraine.
The images come a day after President Biden said “things could go crazy quickly” between Russia and Ukraine.
“It’s not like we’re dealing with a terrorist organization. We’re dealing with one of the largest armies in the world. It’s a very different situation and things could go crazy quickly,” Biden told NBC News’ Lester Holt.
Western countries have been trying to use diplomatic means to de-escalate the situation, but Russia has not been receptive and has said they are allowed to move their troops and equipment where they want within their territory.
