Macron to Biden and Harris: ‘Welcome back to the Paris Agreement!’
French president Emmanuel Macron congratulated President Biden and Vice President Harris and welcomed them back to the climate-focused Paris Agreement.
“To @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. Best wishes on this most significant day for the American people!” Macron tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “We are together. We will be stronger to face the challenges of our time. Stronger to build our future. Stronger to protect our planet. Welcome back to the Paris Agreement!”
To @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris.
Best wishes on this most significant day for the American people!
We are together.
We will be stronger to face the challenges of our time. Stronger to build our future. Stronger to protect our planet. Welcome back to the Paris Agreement!— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) January 20, 2021
One of former President Trump’s first major actions as president was leaving the Paris Agreement in 2017. Biden had promised during the 2020 campaign to rejoin the agreement upon assuming office.
Biden is expected to rejoin the Paris Agreement by signing an executive order on his first day as president.
The former VP had made combatting climate change a core issue of his campaign. Among the climate-related goals he listed was reaching zero net emissions by the year 2050.
Macron joins a bevy of world leaders in congratulating Biden and Harris. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have all publicly offered their good wishes to the new administration.
Queen Elizabeth reportedly sent a private message to Biden before the inauguration began.
Trump was notably absent from the list of world leaders to offer well wishes to Biden and Harris. Reports came out on Wednesday that he had left a letter for Biden at the White House, emulating former President Obama who also left a note for Trump as he assumed office in 2017.
