A group of Flemish politicians on Thursday joked that President Trump could have the southern region of Belgium for one euro after the U.S. president floated the idea of purchasing Greenland.
“Dear President @realDonaldTrump, one euro and Wallonia is yours. Call us. #GreenlandIsNotForSale,” Jong N-VA, the youth wing of the New Flemish Alliance, tweeted Thursday.
The tweet included an edited photo depicting Trump Tower in the Belgian city of Durbuy.
“It was just a joke aimed at a young Flemish audience, going along with something trending on twitter, nothing more,” Jong N-VA President Lawrence Vancraeyenest told Euronews. “I sincerely hope there is still room for some humor in politics. Especially young people need that.”{mosads}
The image was likely meant to resemble one tweeted by Trump on Monday that showed Trump Tower looming over Greenland along with the caption, “I promise not to do this to Greenland!”
Since Trump floated the idea over the weekend, several officials have rejected it, including Denmark’s prime minister, who said the proposal was “absurd.”
“We are open for business, but we’re not for sale,” said Ane Lone Bagger, Greenland’s foreign minister.
