Trump says UK’s Boris Johnson would be an ‘excellent’ prime minister
President Trump praised politician Boris Johnson who is one of several people running for the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party leadership.
“I think Boris would do a very good job. I think he would be excellent,” Trump told The Sun in an interview published Friday. “I like him. I have always liked him. I don’t know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person.
{mosads}“He has been very positive about me and our country,” he added. The paper reported that he did not give Johnson a full endorsement. Trump will be in the U.K. for a state visit starting Monday.
The president also said his endorsement would be very valuable and that several politicians in the race have asked for it, but he declined to say who.
“I could help anybody if I endorse them. I mean, we’ve had endorsement where they have gone up for 40, 50 points at a shot,” he said. “Now that is here, but I understand over there would be a great endorsement.”
Johnson is considered a leading candidate to replace British Prime Minister Theresa May, who this month announced her resignation. Johnson has reportedly been ordered to appear in court and is accused of lying to the public while promoting Brexit in 2016.
May said she will step down on June 7 after she has been unable to garner support for her Brexit plan.
