16 dead in two-bus crash near US-Mexico border
More than a dozen people are dead after two buses carrying miners collided head-on near a gold mine entrance just south of the U.S.-Mexico border early Tuesday morning.
The Arizona Republic reported that 16 people died and 14 more were injured in the crash, which occurred at the Noche Buena open-pit mine two hours south of the Lukeville, Ariz., port of entry.
The crash occurred just after 3:30 a.m. local time, according to the Republic.
All of those on board who have been identified so far were from Mexico, the paper reported, adding that the two vehicles were of different sizes and that all the deaths occurred on board the smaller vehicle.
The Sonora Attorney General’s Office told local news affiliate ABC15 that the deaths all occurred on board a smaller van.
The 14 injured people were taken to nearby Caborca and hospitalized for injuries including severe bruises and fractures, according to the newspaper.
