Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday began her platinum jubilee ahead of the official anniversary on Sunday.
The 95-year-old queen, who’s celebrating 70 years on the throne, hosted community groups at her Sandringham residence on Saturday, Reuters reported. The queen wore a light blue dress for the occasion while listening to a concert band play “Congratulations,” according to Buckingham Palace.
The queen also cut a cake that was given to her and indulged in a curry and mayonnaise-based dish. Angela Wood — who as a 19-year-old culinary student helped invent the dish in 1953 to celebrate Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne — presented the meal to the queen, according to Reuters.
Elizabeth became queen in 1952 after her father, King George VI, died. In 2015, she broke the record for the longest ruler in British history.
The palace showed footage from the celebration of the queen looking at photos of royal jubilees from those previously in power, Reuters noted.
Elizabeth has had scarce public appearances since she was hospitalized last year, but she has still carried out her royal duties.
