Iraqi officials say Baghdad airport hit by three rockets

Iraq’s airport in the capital city of Baghdad was struck by three rockets on Friday, military officials said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press.

No casualties were reported, but two commercial planes were damaged from the strike, AP noted.

The Baghdad airport contains a military base with U.S. staff. But the rockets landed between the civilian and military sections of the airport, two people familiar with the matter told AP under the condition of anonymity.

Earlier this month, Iraqi defenses shot down armed drones that were attempting to strike a U.S. air base west of Baghdad. That attack coincided with the second anniversary of the death of top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. strike near the Baghdad airport in January 2020.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi called the Friday attack an attempt “to undermine Iraq’s reputation, that we have endeavored to restore in the region and internationally,” according to AP.
