UK prime minister’s wife announces she is pregnant

The wife of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced in an Instagram post on Saturday that she is pregnant with the couple’s second child and revealed she had suffered an earlier miscarriage.

Carrie Johnson said she hopes to welcome the couple’s “rainbow baby” — a term for a child born after a stillbirth, miscarriage or infant death — around Christmas, The Associated Press reported.

“At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken,” she wrote. “I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again, but I’ve also felt like a bag of nerves.

“Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well,” she continued. “I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too.”

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer took to Twitter to congratulate the two and addressed Carrie Johnson’s miscarriage, saying he was sorry to hear to the news.

“Congratulations to Carrie and Boris Johnson on the happy news that they’re expecting another child. I’m very sorry to hear of Carrie’s earlier miscarriage. I’m sure that her speaking out will be of comfort to others. Every best wish to them both,” Starmer wrote.

In April 2020, Boris and Carrie Johnson welcomed their first child, Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson. According to CNN, the couple gave their son the middle name “Nicholas” in honor of several doctors who attended to the prime minister while he was in the hospital battling COVID-19.

In May, Boris and Carrie Johnson were married in London at Westminster Cathedral during a private ceremony, the AP reported.

The wire service noted that Boris Johnson had fathered four children in his previous marriage to second wife Marina Wheeler.
