Pope Francis eats breakfast, takes walk after surgery

Pope Francis was up walking and eating breakfast two days after his intestinal surgery.

“His Holiness Pope Francis rested well during the night,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said on Tuesday, ABC News reported. “This morning he had breakfast, read some newspapers and got up to walk. The post-operative recovering is regular. Routine control tests are good.”

The surgery on Sunday took three hours as the left side of the pope’s colon was removed. 

Bruni previously said the surgery was for “a symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon,” meaning the narrowing of the pope’s large intestine.

The 84-year-old is expected to be in the hospital for one week as long as no complications arise.

Francis asked for people to pray for him a week before the surgery, but didn’t specifically mention the surgery in his prayer request. 

“I ask you to pray for the pope, pray in a special way,” Francis said. “The pope needs your prayers.”

It is unclear if he will be at the next routine public appearance set for July 11, ABC reported.
