College students were kidnapped by armed gunmen from their school in Nigeria on Friday.

A police spokesperson told CNN that it is unclear how many students were abducted from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Mando, Kaduna.

“The police and the military are on top of the situation. We are trying to liaise with the school management to know the exact number of students that were abducted and then see the possibility of rescuing them unhurt and arresting the perpetrators,” said Kaduna police spokesman Mohammed Jalige.

Nigeria has a history of gunmen kidnapping students, particularly girls, from their schools and then ransoming them back to the government.

“We saw them and ran away … the bandits came and were firing their guns and took away the girls,” Jamilu Abdullahi, a student at the college, told CNN.

The attackers went after the girls dormitory even though the boys is closer to the fence that the kidnappers entered, according to CNN.

In February, kidnappers attacked another college in the middle of the night and grabbed several students from the school.

Another attack occurred in December, when almost 330 students were kidnapped from the Government Science Secondary School.

Girls are still escaping from their attackers following a kidnapping that happened seven years ago by Boko Haram, a militant group.
