Former Mexican federal police official accused of torturing suspects turns himself in

A former Mexican federal police official who was accused of torturing suspects during an investigation turned himself in, authorities confirmed on Friday, Reuters reported. 

Carlos Gomez Arrieta previously oversaw the Federal Ministerial Police at the time of the 2014 abduction and apparent murder of 43 student teachers from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College. He has faced an arrest order since March. 

Gomez is accused of “probable participation” in the torture and forced disappearance of some individuals questioned in the investigation. The United Nations human rights office has also accused authorities of torturing dozens of people connected to the investigation.

He has previously denied the torture allegations, Reuters reported. He resigned late last year after being identified in a video that appeared to show officials torturing a suspect.

“We hope that … he can also say where the kids are and who else participated in their disappearance,” Felipe De La Cruz, the father of one of the missing student teachers said, Reuters reported.

Investigators found a bone fragment of one of the student teachers in July. Prior to the discovery, the remains of just one of the student teachers had been identified by officials, according to the outlet.
