Spain surpasses China in number of coronavirus cases
Spain has surpassed China in its official count of confirmed coronavirus cases, putting it behind only the U.S. and Italy in the global pandemic.
Spain has 85,195 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and China, where the virus originated, has seen 82,198 cases, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
Spain has a total of 7,340 confirmed deaths, and China has 3,308, according to the same data.
Italy has the second highest number of confirmed cases, at 97,689, and the most deaths from the virus with 10,770 confirmed.
The U.S. has the most confirmed cases, with more than 144,000 confirmed and 2,575 deaths, based on the data.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Saturday ordered all nonessential workers to stay home for at least two weeks, Reuters reported. The same day, President Trump announced he was extending social distancing guidelines in the U.S. through the end of April.
