Pompeo offers Ukraine full assistance in investigation of downed plane

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Friday that the United States will offer Ukraine full assistance in the investigation into the Ukrainian passenger jet that crashed after departing a Tehran airport this week.

The incident killed all 176 passengers on the jet. According to a press statement from the State Department, Pompeo called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to express condolences for the Ukrainian citizens killed and offer American resources to assist in the investigation.

“Secretary Pompeo offered the U.S. government’s full assistance in the ongoing investigation,” wrote State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus in a press statement. “He also reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and underscored our long-term strategic partnership.”

The crash was initially attributed to technical issues, but as of Thursday several U.S. officials began telling reporters that they believe the Iranian government is responsible.

The plane crash occurred hours after Iran launched missiles on two Iraqi air bases used by U.S. troops as retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. No U.S. or Iraqi casualties were reported in those attacks.
