UN security council rejects Russia’s proposal to condemn Syrian strikes

The United Nations (U.N.) Security Council voted against a Russian proposal to condemn the U.S. and its allies’ recent missile strikes against Syria, Reuters reported.

The draft resolution would have condemned “the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic by the U.S. and its allies in violation of international law and the U.N. Charter.”

Of the 15 current members of the security council, only Russia, China and Bolivia voted in favor of Russia’s resolution, Reuters said. It needed nine votes and no vetoes from the permanent members — the U.S., Russia, China, France and the U.K. — to pass.

The vote comes one day after the U.S., U.K. and France launched joint missile strikes against three chemical weapons facilities in Syria.

The attack was in response to an apparent chemical weapons attack on a rebel-controlled suburb of Damascus that is believed to have been carried out by the Syrian government.
