Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has resigned, according to multiple reports.

His resignation came amid impeachment proceedings in Zimbabwe’s Parliament.

The speaker of the country’s Parliament said it had received a letter from Mugabe that said he was resigning “with immediate effect,” according to The Associated Press.

{mosads}This past weekend, Mugabe refused to step down from his post despite calls from his own party to do so.

Members of the political party ZANU-PF on Sunday expelled Mugabe and appointed former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa their new leader. The party issued an ultimatum that Mugabe would be impeached as president if he did not step down by midday Monday.

Before the impeachment proceedings Tuesday, Mnangagwa said Mugabe should “accept the will of the people.”

Mugabe, 93, has led Zimbabwe for 37 years.

A military coup placed him under house arrest last week after he fired Mnangagwa and indicated he would transfer power to his wife, Grace Mugabe.
