Iraq nearing end of battle for Mosul: report
Iraq is reportedly nearing the end of its battle with jihadists in Mosul, the city in Iraq where the Islamic State in Iraq & Syria (ISIS) once had its stronghold.
A commander in Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) told Agence France-Presse Sunday that the battle to retake Mosul should be completed “within days” as forces fight the last jihadists in the city.
{mosads}”We are not able to specify when the battles will end because of the narrow type of streets in the Old City and also the presence of civilian detainees,” Staff Brigadier General Nabil al-Fatlawi said.
By civilian detainees, Fatlawi meant humans used as shields in battle by ISIS.
Fatlawi estimated approximately 300 jihadists remain in Mosul.
Iraqi forces have been working to oust ISIS from Mosul since operations began in October of 2016.
