Kerry to meet with Iran’s foreign minister at United Nations
Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to meet with Iran’s foreign minister on Thursday at the United Nations, The Associated Press reports.
The meeting would be the first of its kind in many years and is expected to take place on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City.
Kerry is likely to come in contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during a meeting with a group of six nations who are seeking to negotiate a deal over Iran’s nuclear program. The meeting, announced Monday by top European Union diplomat Catherine Ashton, will also include Russia; China; France; Great Britain and Germany.
{mosads}The meeting comes as Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, is making overtures to the United States about a resumption of diplomacy over the nuclear issue.
President Obama could speak with Rouhani briefly during U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s annual luncheon Tuesday, in what would be the first such exchange between leaders of the two countries since they broke off diplomatic relations in 1980.
