Indian leader lands in Pakistan for first time in 12 years
India’s leader has landed in Pakistan for a surprise visit — the first time India’s prime minister has visited the nuclear rival in 12 years.
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif greeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the airport in Lahore, according to CNN.
Modi stopped there on his way back to New Dehli from Afghanistan.
Talks between the two leaders were expected to last two hours.
The two countries have fought three wars since 1947 and relations have been icy in recent years, particularly following the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai.
The Obama administration has pushed Pakistan to help bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice. In an interview earlier this year, President Obama said that while the U.S. sees Pakistan as a partner in the war on terror, “safe havens within Pakistan are not acceptable.”
