WNBA announces zero COVID-19 positive tests, 99 percent fully vaccinated

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) announced Monday there had been zero COVID-19 positive tests among players and that 99 percent of the league is now fully vaccinated. 

“Since the start of the start of the regular season, zero new players have returned a confirmed positive test for COVID-19,” The WNBA said in a statement on Monday. “In addition, 99 percent of the league’s players are now fully vaccinated, and all 12 teams met the threshold for being considered a fully-vaccinated team.”

In reporting 0 positive covid tests since the start of the season, the WNBA announces 99 percent of the league’s players are now fully vaccinated. All 12 teams have met the threshold for being considered a fully-vaccinated team.

The WNBA vaccination rates appear to be much higher than other sports leagues. 

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in April that more than 70 percent of his league’s players has gotten a vaccine shot, according to Yahoo! News.

The MLB commissioner’s office and player’s association shared on Friday that 23 of their 30 ball clubs have reached the 85 percent vaccination rate and that 85.4% of tier 1 and tier 2 individuals are fully vaccinated, according to a SportsNet report.

The NFL said that 65 percent of their players have received one shot of the vaccine, according to NBC’s Pro Football Talk report on Friday.

WNBA players have used their platforms over the past few years, especially during the national uprising in the summer of 2020.

League players had the name of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT who was shot and killed by Louisville, Ky., police officers in March 2020, on the back of their uniforms. 

Atlanta Dream players protested owner former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) over her remarks on the Black Lives Matter movement. Loeffler, who lost her Senate seat in a January runoff election, sold the team afterward.
