McCarthy on Trump ObamaCare position: ‘Call the office’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday declined to comment on the Trump administration’s position that all of ObamaCare should be struck down in court, telling reporters to call his office.

McCarthy said at a press conference when asked whether he supports the Trump administration’s move that he had not read through the legal filing made last night.

{mosads}“Just call the office and we’ll follow back to you,” McCarthy told reporters.

The response illustrates the tough position that congressional Republicans are in, caught between supporting President Trump and reviving an issue that is seen as one of the main issues Democrats focused on in winning back the House last year.

“But I think the president has always been very clear that he wanted to repeal ObamaCare and put a system in that actually lowers the cost, protects individuals’ pre-existing conditions and have a health care system that works that has a relationship between the patient and the doctor,” McCarthy added.

The two-sentence legal filing from the Department of Justice on Monday night says that the administration agrees with a lower court judge’s decision in December that struck down all of ObamaCare.

The case is now being appealed, and many legal experts in both parties doubt that it will ultimately succeed.

Democrats are pouncing on the issue, accusing Republicans of wanting to overturn ObamaCare’s pre-existing condition protections and health coverage for about 20 million people.
