67 likely mumps cases reported at Temple University

A mumps outbreak at Temple University has grown to 67 likely cases, Philadelphia health officials said Tuesday. 

That’s an increase of 13 cases from the day before, NBC News Philadelphia reported.

{mosads}Because of the outbreak, the university will now require incoming students have two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine before starting school. 

Nationwide, 30 states and Washington, D.C., have reported 151 mumps cases from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28. 

Outbreaks can occur in communities of people who previously had one or two doses of the MMR vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 

Some people who receive two doses of the vaccine can still get mumps if they have prolonged, close contact with someone who has it, the CDC says.
