Conservative group to broadcast live third-trimester ultrasound in Times Square
A conservative Christian group will broadcast a live ultrasound of a third-trimester fetus later this year in response to a new law in New York expanding access to abortion.
Focus on the Family President Jim Daly told CBN News on Tuesday that his group will hold an event with “great speakers” as well as detailed imaging of a third-trimester fetus still developing inside the uterus.
{mosads}“We’ll have great speakers. We’re going to have music, but we’re also going to do a live ultrasound of a third-trimester baby. And with the 4-D technology that we have, it looks like a picture of a 1-year-old,” Daly told CBN News.
“There is no way a person is going to be able to say, ‘That is not a child.’ It is a child and we want everybody to see it,” he added.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed into law last month a bill that expanded access to abortion to women after 24 weeks of pregnancy in cases where the mother’s life is threatened by the pregnancy. The law also adjusts abortion practices to be regulated under public health law rather than criminal law, and allows other health officials including licensed midwives to perform abortions.
“Today we are taking a giant step forward in the hard-fought battle to ensure a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her own personal health, including the ability to access an abortion,” the governor said in January.
“With the signing of this bill, we are sending a clear message that whatever happens in Washington, women in New York will always have the fundamental right to control their own body,” Cuomo continued in a statement at the time.
Daly responded to Cuomo on Tuesday, noting that his stance towards the governor was not “adversarial” despite the protest’s planned location in downtown Manhattan.
“Well, that’s the epicenter of everything. I think if you talk to anyone in Manhattan, Times Square is where it all happens,” Daly told CBN. “We’re not shy about going there and saying to Governor Cuomo and others, ‘Let’s look. This isn’t adversarial. Let’s just take a position. Let’s see what an ultrasound looks like.’ “
