Week ahead: FDA bill in the Senate

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-Nev.) on Thursday filed cloture on a motion to proceed to the bill. The House version is ready for a floor vote.

The process in both chambers has drawn praise for its smoothness so far.

Another theme trending next week is delivery system reform.

On Tuesday, the left-leaning Center for American Progress will host a discussion on care delivery with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.); Richard Gilfillan, who is director of the Innovation Center at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid; and Zeke Emanuel, vice president for global initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday at 10 a.m., the Senate Finance Committee will hear testimony on “Progress in Health Care Delivery: Innovations from the Field.”

And healthcare reform will be the topic Monday at the National Press Club, where free-market group Economics 21 will host a panel with Charles Blahous, a public trustee for Medicare, and Jared Bernstein, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and a former economic adviser to Vice President Biden. The event will focus on the fiscal consequences of the healthcare law.
