‘World Vasectomy Day’ scheduled to address overpopulation concerns

Crusaders against overpopulation are urging men to get vasectomies on Nov. 7 to help avoid unplanned pregnancies.

The second-annual “World Vasectomy Day” is bringing together women’s health organizations, physicians and groups concerned about population growth to promote the procedure.

{mosads}Documentary filmmaker Jonathan Stack, a founder of the event, said it’s designed to encourage men to think about their role in family planning.

“World Vasectomy Day is not just about how many vasectomies are completed, but how many conversations are launched,” Stack said in a statement. “Engaging men in family planning is the right thing to do for yourself, for your family and for our future.”

The marathon event will make free or low-cost vasectomies available to men in 30 countries. Doctors are encouraged to “perform as many vasectomies as possible in 24 hours” around the world.

At least 250 physicians have agreed to participate so far, according to the event’s founders.

Last year’s Vasectomy Day was headquartered at the Royal Institution in Australia, where procedures were streamed live online.

The Population Media Center, a sponsor of the event, said procedures will be broadcast again this year from a Planned Parenthood facility in Florida.
