Poll: Women want to vote for anti-Hobby Lobby candidates

Fifty-seven percent of women say they are likely to vote for a candidate in the upcoming midterms who opposes the recent Supreme Court Hobby Lobby ruling, according to a new poll.

The survey conducted by Hart Research Associates, a Democratic polling firm, also found 58 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 55 say they oppose the ruling which found requiring businesses to provide free contraception to its workers violates the religious rights of “closely held” companies.

{mosads}“This poll shows that women are focused on the Hobby Lobby ruling, they’re angry about it, and they’re going to vote based on it this November,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president at Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “The Hobby Lobby decision has lit a fuse that cannot be put out.”

While overall, 72 percent of women said the Hobby Lobby ruling was somewhat or very important to them, the issue was more important for younger, unmarried and minority women.

Democrats are trying to win over women voters as part of their strategy to maintain control of the Senate.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg said while Republicans held a slight lead overall in a separate, Senate-based poll, Democrats are holding their own, and unmarried women could be the key to putting them over the edge in the competitive states.

Democrats are using the Hobby Lobby ruling as a lightning rod to draw in and motivate women before the November elections.

They have already have floated several bills in the Senate and the House that would reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling, knowing they did not have the votes to pass them.
