Health officials on Monday said they had found a second U.S. case of a deadly virus that has killed dozens abroad, according to reports.
The second reported case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is in Florida. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health are expected to hold a press conference this afternoon to update the public.
{mosads}MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus. Since the first case was reported in Saudi Arabia, the disease has killed 145 people, according to the World Health Organization mostly in the Middle East. No cure exists for the disease, which can be fatal in one-third of observed cases, according to reports.
Earlier this month, the first case of the deadly disease to reach the U.S. was reported in Indiana. In that case the patient has recovered, and was released from the hospital on Friday.
So far all reported cases of MERS outside of the Middle East have been tracked back to individuals who have recently traveled from the region.
