Document outlines small-farmer protections in Senate’s food-safety bill

A new document circulating Friday on Capitol Hill outlines how the Senate’s food-safety bill compromise would affect small farms and small businesses.

The Health panel’s bipartisan manager’s package, released Thursday, incorporates several changes to the bill that cleared committee, including some that favor small farmers. The Senate is expected to take up the bill shortly after returning from the August recess.

The House passed its version of food-safety legislation in July 2009.

Congressional staffers have also prepared a synopsis of the Senate bill.
