Trump asked Japan to buy ‘huge amount’ of US farm goods: report

President Trump has reportedly asked Japan to buy a “huge amount” of U.S. farm products. 

He requested that Japan buy specific goods including soybeans and wheat, Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday, citing sources in the Japanese and U.S. governments, according to Reuters. 

{mosads}Japan’s government was reportedly considering is response and the buy would reportedly be worth hundreds of millions of dollars including the cost of transportation.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment. 

The requested purchase would be separate from current trade negotiations between the two countries. The U.S. and Japan are hoping to reach a bilateral trade agreement by September according to the Nikkei business daily.

The news comes as the U.S. is engaged in a trade war with China, which has particularly affected farmers. The Trump administration has imposed a 25 percent tariff on a separate $250 billion in Chinese products. Beijing has responded by refusing to buy U.S. agricultural goods.
