IRS extends tax deadlines in parts of Kentucky following tornadoes

The IRS announced Tuesday that it has extended tax deadlines for individuals and businesses in parts of Kentucky, following recent deadly tornadoes.

The agency postponed the deadline for impacted taxpayers to file their 2021 individual tax returns from April 18 to May 16. Several other tax deadlines, including the quarterly estimated tax payment deadlines due Jan. 18 and April 18, were also extended to May 16. 

The IRS announced the extension after severe storms and tornadoes over the weekend killed dozens of people across Kentucky and several other states.

The extension currently applies to taxpayers who live or have businesses in eight Kentucky counties, but the IRS said that it will provide the same relief to any other parts of Kentucky or neighboring states that receive disaster declarations by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The IRS routinely extends tax deadlines for areas impacted by natural disasters. For example, the agency last year extended the deadline for taxpayers in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma to file their 2020 individual income tax returns following winter storms in those states.
