1 member of law enforcement arrested, 2 suspended over conduct during Capitol attack

One member of law enforcement was arrested and two Capitol Police officers were suspended for their behavior during the Wednesday insurrection at the Capitol, according to Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio).

“The Capitol Police are looking at everybody involved that potentially facilitated, on a big level or small level in any way, and it’s important that they’re cracking down on that,” Ryan told reporters Monday.

One of the officers who was suspended had been shown taking a selfie with one of the rioters in video footage that went viral on social media. The other had apparently donned a red “Make America Great Again” hat and directed the mob.

Details of the arrested individual remained sketchy, and Ryan said he was not clear if it was a member of the Capitol Police, the National Guard or other law enforcement.

Ryan, who chairs the funding committee that oversees the Capitol Police, said there was no evidence of a broader “inside job,” or indications that members of the force had cooperated with or organized with the insurrectionists.

He also said he was raising questions as to why more aggressive tactics were not used to deter the crowds seeking to break into the Capitol and disrupt its certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s November election victory.

Ryan confirmed that there were between 10 to 15 total investigations for misconduct during the event taking place.
