Trump sends news clips, letter to Capitol Hill in support of new North American trade deal

President Trump on Tuesday evening sent news clips and a two-line letter to the legislative directors of every member of Congress, touting the strength of the new North American trade deal completed over the weekend. 

Trump wrote in the short note to House and Senate lawmakers that his United-States-Mexico-Canada Agreement “has received fantastic reviews.”

{mosads}”It will go down as one of the best ever made, and will also benefit Mexico and Canada!” Trump wrote with a huge signature on the page. 

He included two news articles with the brief letter, one that says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will start trying to sell the deal in Canada, while his political rivals argue he capitulated to the U.S. president.

The other article says that the old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) won’t be missed. 

Trump has called NAFTA the worst deal ever made and during a press conference on Monday said it was finally fair. 

The U.S. and Mexico inked a two-nation deal in August and Trump ramped up the pressure to get Canada to sign on before a U.S. self-imposed Sept. 30 deadline. 

After nearly nonstop work in Washington and Ottawa the trade negotiators from both countries agreed to maintain the three-country deal.

Many lawmakers, business groups and unions had said they would not throw their support behind a two-nation deal when it hits Capitol Hill.
