Steph Curry on mention in GOP tax plan: ‘Mama, I made it’

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry said Thursday he has no idea how he became the only person mentioned in the House GOP tax plan, the AP reported.

“It was weird, that’s about it,” Curry said following the Warriors game on Friday. “There’s a lot of people wondering why I was called out, whatever the case may be, but mama, I made it.”

House Republicans released their 429-page tax bill on Thursday, the first step toward their goal of rewriting the tax code. Curry, the sole person named in the GOP tax plan, was used as an example in a GOP explanation of proposed changes to pass-through tax rates.

“Our legislation will ensure this much-needed tax relief goes to the local job creators it’s designed to help by distinguishing between the individual wage income of NBA All-Star Stephen Curry and the pass-through business income of Steve’s Bike Shop,” read the GOP document.

Curry joked on Twitter yesterday that he wondered “if Steve’s bike shop is hiring.”

A spokesperson for Republican leaders the House Ways and Means Committee, which handles tax policy, said “When we talk about how tax reform will help local small business owners, we regularly reference famous people to help clearly communicate how we are proposing to separate wage income from small business income.

“Our messaging has previously mentioned Bill Gates, Tom Brady, and Michael Jordan, among others,” said the aide, pointing to examples where GOP leaders invoked Gates alongside “Bill the Electrician” and Brady with “Tom’s Bike Shop,” and Jordan with “Michael the local plumber.”

Curry is one of the highest-paid professional athletes in the world, currently in the first year of a five-year, $200 million contract. He’s widely considered one of the best active basketball players, and among the top shooters in NBA history.

Curry also irked President Trump earlier this year when he encouraged his team not to accept the president’s traditional invitation to the White House after winning the NBA championship.

Trump revoked the invite, citing Curry’s criticism.
