Tax Policy Center says fewer people paying no income taxes

Still, long before Romney, Republican officials had complained that roughly half of taxpayers didn’t have any income tax liability.

{mosads}The Tax Policy Center had previously estimated that 50 percent of households paid no income tax in 2008 and 2009, with 47 percent having no liability in 2010.

Those figures came at a time when the fiscal crisis caused economic pain around the country, and as the White House and lawmakers cut taxes to spur the economy. Many of the tax breaks meant to stimulate the economy are now expiring.

Roughly two-thirds of those who won’t pay income taxes do work, meaning they owe payroll taxes. Most of the rest are over 65 and retired.
