IRS brings back retired executive for top job

Dalrymple will replace Heather Maloy, who will return to her previous role as commissioner of the IRS’s large business division.

{mosads}Werfel had selected Maloy as deputy commissioner in June, not long after he took the top spot. Steven Miller, the acting IRS commissioner President Obama pushed out in June, had also served as deputy commissioner for services and enforcement.

Dalrymple originally retired from the IRS in 2006 and took a job at Deloitte. His appointment comes weeks after Obama nominated John Koskinen, a former Freddie Mac chairman whom the president called a professional at revamping organizations in need of reform, as IRS commissioner.

The IRS first disclosed that it singled out Tea Party groups applying for tax exemption more than three months ago, and GOP lawmakers continue to say that organizations on the right were more heavily scrutinized than liberal groups.

But Democrats stress that there’s no sign of political motivation for the targeting, and that the agency scrutinized liberal groups as well.
