Dem ad blasts Indiana senate candidate on Social Security
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) released an ad on Monday attacking Rep. Todd Young for his stance on Social Security.
In the ad, a narrator says that the Republican Senate candidate has called Social Security and Medicare “welfare” and described Social Security as “fatally flawed” and a “Ponzi scheme.”
“In Washington, Young said he was proud to back a plan that meant deep cuts to Social Security,” the narrator adds.
The ad buy is worth at least $1 million, a DSCC official said.
Roll Call first reported the ad.
The Indiana Senate race became more competitive when former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh joined it earlier this month. Democrats need to net four seats in November to regain Senate control if they also keep the presidency.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report calls the Indiana race a toss-up.
Young’s campaign said Monday that the Republican candidate has fought to preserve Social Security and Medicare. The campaign also blasted Bayh for voting for higher taxes on Social Security benefits and casting “the deciding vote for ObamaCare.”
“Hoosiers want to change Washington and they won’t be swayed by attacks from [Democratic Sens.] Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer who want to protect the rigged system that made Evan Bayh so rich,” Young’s campaign manager, Trevor Foughty, said.
The Indiana Senate race isn’t the first competitive Senate race this year with ads attacking a Republican Senate candidate on Social Security. The American Federation of Teachers has run ads in Ohio attacking Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) for his past support of efforts to privatize Social Security.
