Trump’s Treasury pick posts big losses in 2015
The investment guru Donald Trump wants to head up the Treasury Department just posted his worst losses since the financial crisis.
Hedge fund chief Carl Icahn reported Tuesday that his firm posted an 18 percent loss in 2015, according to CNBC.
{mosads}The last time Icahn Enterprises lost that much money, it was down 36 percent in 2008, during the depths of the financial collapse.
Icahn is a Trump backer, and the GOP front-runner has floated the 80-year-old investor as a potential Treasury Secretary if he wins the White House.
But for now, Icahn’s firm is grappling with steep losses, driven by a significant downturn in energy investments as the global economy appears to be slowing down.
For his part, Icahn has been coy about whether he would accept a position in the Trump administration. He initially turned down the position after Trump mentioned him as a candidate.
“I am flattered but do not get up early enough in the morning to accept this opportunity,” he said at the time.
But in August, he tweeted that he would accept the job after watching a GOP debate. He called the current political system “completely dysfunctional” and in “dire need of a breath of fresh air.”
