Taxes don’t drive movement between states: Report

Lower taxes aren’t a major reason people move between states, according to a new release from a liberal group.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities argued that new jobs, family considerations, housing prices and warmer climates are the most likely reasons will pick up and move to another state.

{mosads}”Of course, some people relocate because they think their taxes are too high or take state and local taxes into account in deciding where to live,” CBPP argued. “But those cases are so rare compared to other reasons people move that they shouldn’t drive state tax policy decisions.”

Several states have cut their top income tax rate in recent years, a practice that CBPP and other liberals feels is misguided because it makes it more difficult to pay for schools and infrastructure.

Even the top income tax rates in high-tax states is far below the top federal rate, which is currently close to 40 percent.
