Gallup: Majority support foreign trade

People in the U.S. feel increasingly favorable about foreign trade, according to a new poll from Gallup. 

{mosads}The polling company says 54 percent of adults believe trade can be a positive for economic growth, while 38 percent see it as a threat. That’s down slightly from the year before, but much better than in 2008 – when 52 percent of adults saw trade as a threat.

The poll comes as President Obama is struggling to gain traction on his trade agenda – which includes potential pacts with European and Asian nations – amid skepticism from Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill. 

According to Gallup, the trade issue breaks down less on party lines than on education level. College graduates are much more likely to favor expanded trade than high school graduates. But more than 50 percent of Democrats and Republicans both back the idea.
